Hello and welcome! My name is Amanda Determan, and I am a mixed media artist based in the Rocky Mountain West. Bitterroot Supply is the online home for my handcrafted artist books, home goods, and other assorted objets d’art. I learned to bind books twenty years ago at the University of Montana, and have been binding my own sketchbooks and journals since then. I also work in a number of other media, including ceramics, textile arts, bead weaving, and printmaking.
The bitterroot flower is Montana’s state flower — it’s also known as the resurrection flower. And while the idea for Bitterroot Supply is a seed that was planted several years ago, it didn’t take root until 2020. During the pandemic, I returned to art as a means of quieting my busy brain and processing the tumultuous times we found ourselves living through.
Like many children who displayed an early artistic flair, I was encouraged by the very well-meaning adults around me to choose a career that offered stability. So I pursued a degree in photojournalism (followed by an MFA in digital media) and spent many productive and rewarding years in journalism, communications, and marketing. I took the plunge into self-employment in January of 2022, and Bitterroot Supply is one piece of the multidisciplinary puzzle that is my creative freelance endeavor.
